About Tanay

A Journey of Rhythm, Rigor, and Reverence

Tanay Rege is a Mumbai-based professional tabla artist, whose musical journey reflects dedication, discipline, and a deep devotion to the art of rhythm. With over 17 years of intensive training under the tutelage of Shri Praveen Karkare and the eminent Pt. Yogesh Samsi, Tanay has developed a rich and nuanced command over the tabla, blending tradition with innovation. His music embodies clarity, precision, and an emotional connect that transcends boundaries.

Musical Training and Foundation

From a young age, Tanay displayed an extraordinary sense of rhythm. His early training under Shri Praveen Karkare laid a strong foundation in the Punjab and Farukhabad gharanas of tabla. Under the mentorship of Pt. Yogesh Samsi, he deepened his understanding of layakari, accompaniment, and solo presentation — cultivating a style marked by clarity of bols, refined aesthetics, and spontaneous creativity. His academic background includes a Master’s degree in Music from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune, a Visharad in Tabla from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, and a Bachelor of Commerce from M. L. Dahanukar College, Mumbai — balancing both art and intellect.

Performances and Milestones

Tanay’s artistry has taken him across prestigious stages in India and abroad. He has performed as both soloist and accompanist at eminent venues such as the NCPA (Mumbai), Saptak Festival (Ahmedabad), Tana Riri Mahotsav (Vadnagar), Samrat Sangeet Festival (Kolkata), Shri Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Samaroh (Jalandhar), and Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (Mumbai).

Internationally, he has represented Indian classical music at iconic platforms including the Esplanade in Singapore, and the La Biennale Art Festival in Venice, Italy. A landmark in his journey was his performance at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, in the presence of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Nepal Shri Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” — a moment of national pride and artistic recognition.

Tanay’s tabla solos have been particularly appreciated for their intricate rhythm patterns, aesthetic balance, and graceful presentation — earning him a distinct place among the new generation of tabla artists.

Collaborations and Creative Work

Over the years, Tanay has had the privilege of accompanying and collaborating with several maestros of Indian classical music, including Vidushi Ashwini Bhide -  Deshpande ji, Pt. Purbayan Chatterjee, ji Pt. Ajay Pohankar ji, Pt. Raghunandan Panshikar ji, Pt. Jayateerth Mevundi ji, Pt. Ravi Chary ji, and Dr. Ram Deshpande ji. He also shares a unique artistic synergy with Flamenco dancer Kunal Om, exploring cross-cultural rhythm compositions that bring together Indian and Spanish traditions.

In addition to live performance, Tanay has contributed significantly to film and television music. His work includes playing for the Marathi film 'Ticha Shahar Hona' (winner at the Boden Film Festival and nominee at Cannes), and contributing to the background score of “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani”, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. He has also composed for short films such as The First Film, shot across Spain and Colombia.

Teaching and Outreach

Beyond the stage, Tanay is deeply passionate about music education. He has conducted lecture-demonstrations at institutions such as Ecole Mondiale World School, Juhu and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, inspiring young students to understand and appreciate the beauty of rhythm. He continues to teach tabla to students across India and abroad, blending traditional techniques with modern pedagogy

He believes that rhythm unites people across languages and cultures, and through his performances and teaching, he strives to bring Indian classical music to global audiences. With every concert and collaboration, he continues to celebrate the timeless beauty of Indian rhythm while exploring its limitless modern possibilities.
